What is sustainable living? A lot more than backyard gardens, composting and farmers’ markets. A lot more than clean water and sustainable yield.

Sustainable living includes everything that touches your life, and the lives of everybody and everything around you. To simplify things, think of sustainability as a pie cut into slices. To be totally sustainable, each slice should be functioning at an optimal level.

And it should be pretty obvious that any one of the slices could be broken down into numerous sub-topics, and many of these could overlap. For example, Resources would include the food supply, water, fisheries, fuel supplies, etc.  Wellness would include nutrition, food sources, hydration, education, healthcare, diet, and fitness, etc.  Society would include social services as well as the arts, education, justice, governance, spiritual practices, etc.

In other words, give the pie a good swirl, because every aspect of life is mixed up together.

JumblePieAnd that is sustainable living. It requires a conscious as well as conscientious effort on the part of all.
